Type Locality and Naming

It was named by Fu Lipu et al. in 1983. The type section is located at Nanshimengou in Zhouqu County, Gansu Province.

Synonym: (红水沟口组) , Hongshuigou Fm


Lithology and Thickness

The formation, 88 m in thickness, consists of grayish black thin-bedded calcareous slate, dark gray and grayish white thick-bedded banded argillaceous limestone and reef limestone.


Lithology Pattern: 
Shallow-marine marl


Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It rests conformably in between the underlying Maer Fm

Upper contact

It rests conformably in between the overlying Nanshimengou Fm

Regional extent

The lithology of the Hongshuigoukou Fm keeps rather steady except becoming coarser-grained and thicker, up to 679 m in thickness, in Diebu County in west.

Fossils

It yields corals Mesofavosites zhuquensis, Favosites cf. subgothlandicus, Propora sp.; cephalopods Parakionoceras pectinatum, Geisonoceras cf. senile; brachiopods Protathyris ingens, P. gigantea, Atrypoidea quadrata, etc.; conodont Spathognathodus silurica, etc. and graptolite sPristiograptus ultimus, P. praedubius, etc.
